Management of the 2 Puyallup Tribe Emerald Queen Casinos have asked workers to show up on the busiest days of the week even when they are sick. This type of policy will help casinos cope with worker shortage but is definitely against health official advice.

A spokesperson, John Weymer told, said that the casino managers are considering changing the policy as they are aware of the potential it has to spread disease.

Apparently workers only have to come in (even when sick) on the casino’s busiest days which includes weekends, Fridays and public holidays.

If you take into consideration that the Emerald Queen casino group has around 2 000 staff members, then it’s clear to see that you don’t really want sick employees infecting their colleagues.

The casino is very serious about this rule and will even terminate contracts of those who break this rule more than three times. The first time you take a sick day during a busy period, you get a 1 day suspension without pay, and after that it gets worse and worse. This is not an unusual practice for tribal casinos.

Let’s just hope that they ease up on this rule, especially with the threat of swine flu hanging in the air.

The Pennsylvania state House is busy with talks about casino table game legislation. They have to also decide whether they will reinstate a ban that refuses campaign contributions from casino operators and owners.

If the house passes their vote the bill will go to the state Senate, where it will face rejection. The House bill proposes a 34 percent tax rate levy on table game profits. Table games include casino games like dice games, poker and blackjack. The bill will allow racetrack and standalone casinos to offer around 200 casino table games.

The license won’t come cheap however, unless you have $20 million floating around in your back pocket. Most casinos are not keen on offering table games if it comes at such a high price and tax levies.

House representatives are hoping that the bill will help them balance the Pennsylvania state budget. It seems to me like they are after some easy money and that they aren’t thinking about what repercussions there could be.

In short, they want casinos to quickly cough up a few million to help with budgeting problems but they don’t want casinos to donate cash directly to political parties.

Maryland Equity Fund wants in on the Atlantic City Casino Industry Part 2 is part two of a two part blog series – it is recommended that you read this blog series in sequence.

New Century is inviting sellers to bring their deals to them. They say that the company has seen Atlantic City’s true potential and that they would like the area to succeed once again.

The CEO of Trump Entertainment Resorts sounds interested but says he is still waiting for New Century to show him the money. They would be happy to consider the offer should the company be able to prove that they have the relevant financial wherewithal.

Donald Trump and the company’s bondholders are still trying to buy the remains of the company out of the bankruptcy court. New Century would apparently be willing to be a partner with whoever wins the case.

New Century says their offer will be better than the Trumps ($100 000 000) or the bondholders ($125 000 000)

New Century must still however make a concrete offer. Let’s hope an arrangement can be made to help rejuvenate the struggling Atlantic City Casino industry. I’m sure we can all do with some good news.

Maryland Equity Fund wants in on the Atlantic City Casino Industry Part 1 is part one of a two part blog series – it is recommended that you read this blog series in sequence.

New Century Investment is a Maryland private equity fund who wants to buy into the Atlantic City Casino Industry. The company’s chief investment officer, Artin Afsharjavan, is only 21 years old and therefore barely legal to gamble, but he is not allowing this to hold him back.

The company is still deciding who to partner with; they are willing to invest some of their five hundred million dollars with either Donald Trump’s company or the bondholders currently fighting Trump in the bankruptcy court.

Afsharjavan owns many businesses including a Persian restaurant, and is very interested in buying the controlling share of the Trump Entertainment casinos.

Although they would prefer to buy the Trump casinos, they are willing to place bids on other Atlantic City casinos, should they not be able to buy their first choice. There are of course many distressed casinos to snap up at the moment.

Your mother probably told you that it’s polite to not talk religion and politics at dinner parties, especially if you don’t really know your hosts that well. Nowadays, you might as well add casinos to that list.

Ohio authorities are deciding whether or not they want to legalize gambling and casinos in this state. There are, like usual, those chomping at the bit to play and those vehemently against it. What is causing an uproar at the moment is a new TV advertisement that is sponsored by the latter camp.

This anti-casino ad is claiming that all the best casino jobs will be taken by out-of-staters. This is just one of the nasty catfights revolving over whether or not casinos should be built in the four Ohio cities of Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, and Cincinnati.

The anti-casino group in question is called TruthPAC and they are very upset as they found out that the pro-casino group has obtained a copy of their TV ad before it was even aired. A Time Warner account executive has even lost his job because of this.

The pro-casino group is obviously saying the ad is nonsense whereas the anti-casino group calls it ‘nothing but the truth’. The ad cites ‘proof’ that out of towners often get casino jobs and that there will be less job creation than what the casinos cite.

Wynn Resorts management does not seem to think so. Wynn Resorts is one of the worlds biggest casino operators, said that the two planned casinos will not threaten its Macau casino business, even though they will definitely try to lure high-rollers with their lower tax requirements.

It does seem to me, however, that Sentosa will have a bit of an advantage. If you are a high roller and you are playing at a Sentosa casino, you will only pay ten percent in taxies, whereas Macau casinos have a 39% tax requirement. Harsh, I know.

Steve Wynn said that he thinks locals will go to try out the new casinos but that they will still frequent his local casino more often. After all, most people can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars just to save a little bit on tax expenditure. He feels confident that the government’s will take care of the gambling tax issue.

At the moment, half the visitors to Macau and its casinos are day-trippers from China. Most of these day trippers are from the neighboring province of Guangdong.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens in Singapore and Macau and hope that the world is big enough for all the new casinos!

Casino developers recently met with experts in gambling addiction at an East Boston racetrack to discuss the state’s consideration of plans to maybe build resort-style casinos.

Chip Tuttle, the CEO of Suffolk Downs Racetrack said that they are not going to count any chickens before they have hatched. The Racetrack in question has partnered with Wonderland Greyhound Park, and plans to build an East Boston casino if they get the go ahead. Tuttle added that these two groups are in a unique position to take advantage of the opportunity should the state approve their plans, as they have been involved in gambling for the last sixty years.

The forum decided to bring together executives from Suffolk Downs, Mohegan Sun, and Wonderland Greyhound Park to speak with their ‘opposition,’ the gambling addiction treatment experts. The forum is sponsored by the Massachusetts Compulsive Gambling Council.

If the proposal goes ahead, up to three resort-style casinos and slots games could see the light of day at racetracks. Richard Fields, who owns Suffolk Downs Racetrack, said he would like to keep his racetrack but just add a casino to offer clients more options.

Cedric Cromwell, who is the chairman of the famous Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, said he has also not lost hope to build a casino in Middleboro.

How One Giant Casino Could Turn Around Vegas Part 1 is part one of a three part blog series and it is recommended that you read the blogs in sequence.

It seems everyone in Vegas is cant wait for December to start. The casino project has already taken five years since the first plan announcement back in 2004, and the recession has forced the planners to speed up progress.

The project had it share of mishaps, including near bankruptcy, build defects and construction-worker deaths. Full steam ahead though, even though hotel residency rates have declined in the past year. MGM-Mirage states that their project is going well and that they re very excited about the opening.

The CityCenter casino could help Las Vegas get back on its feet, or it could mean the end of the era. It would be a anti-climax if this is the top peak the city will ever reach. The builders are not expecting anyone to be able to match the building’s size for at least the next decade, mostly because of the recession.

All in all the CityCenter casino has helped to rise Las Vegas’ spirit, at least a little bit. It is so large that you can spot it from the Freeway, a breathtaking building.

I don’t envy the Mirage CityCenter casino personnel staff. They had to manage and interview five hundred applicants on the first day alone. The interviewing process will probably take a couple of weeks.

What was strange about the day is that everyone seemed a bit tense and subdued, which are not two words one normally associate with Vegas behavior. Maybe it’s the economic recession that is dampening everyone’s spirits. I could hear some applause coming out of the giant interviewing room though.

An large number of MGM-Mirage employees, already dressed in CityCenter casino attire, seemed very well equipped in squiring around the applicants from station to station. They applicants were interviewed, received job offers, and organized their new clothing and ID badges.

The applicants were mostly from Vegas but also came as far as Ohio, LA and New York City. These people will be the Mirage CityCenter’s new spa managers, clerks, salon receptionists, and bellmen. Those who were rescued from unemployment are very grateful for the opportunity.
