More and more people are gambling online but it seems like the college students market might be growing faster than any other demographic. The state of Florida is now considering to lower the age limit for conventional casinos, which might lead to an influx of young gamblers.

If the two new Florida bills are signed into law, the new legal gambling age would be eighteen instead of twenty one. This would ensure that casino’s get more clientele but I wonder if it might not annoy regular gamblers. Think about it, 18 - 21 year olds are notorious for being loud and raucous and might cause problems with loud and possibly drunken behavior.

Also, it could be argued that young people are more prone to gamble irresponsibly because they are often gambling with their parents money and have not yet learnt how to budget. Some experts say that this age group is the most at risk when it comes to gambling.

It is said that the decision was made in order to have a uniform system. Currently, an 18-year-old can’t play blackjack, slots, or any of the various Class three casino games. On the other hand, they are allowed to play the lottery, poker, and to place bets at horse tracks.

The committee that passed the bill said they felt that eighteen was a good age for legal casino gambling. I guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out.

Online casino provider Playtech has aquired a company called Player2Players and can now add sports betting to its already long and professional list of services.

News agencies have said that Playtech bought the sports betting online casino site because it thought that sports betting was on the up and can allow the company to grow further.

An Israeli called Teddy Sagi owns the majority shares in Playtech, and the company can now offer more services than their biggest online casino rival, CryptoLogic. They added sports betting to their existing profile of online casino, bingo and poker software lines.

All online casino’s that use the Playtech software provider will now be able to also add sports books as one of their offerings. Playtech clients can expect the whole hog – including a complete line of land, mobile and online gambling products.

Playtech seems to be constantly in the news these days as I’ve also recently reported that they struck a deal with Marvel Entertainment. CryptoLogic better watch out and up their ante…

Not only did they strike the deal with Marvel and with Player2Players but their financial report also stated that they struck a deal with William Hill in 2008. Playtech aquired a 29% stake in William Hill for a reported $250 million.

It seems that Playtech is a company worth watching, watch this space for future developments.

A casino in Aberdeen’s city centre made headlines as they are the first one to be granted a 24 hr gaming license.

Aberdeen City Council granted the Gala Casino permission to trade around the clock. The casino won’t, however, be in the position to sell alcohol during all these hours.

The council members voted three to two in favor of the extended casino hours. The two who voted against the move was afraid that the license extension would leave to all other casino’s wanting the same treatment.

As was expected, local churches aren’t happy about the move. The Church of Scotland is saying that the longer hours will allow the casino to take advantage of vulnerable people.

A councilor who approved the decision, Ronald Clark, said that he doesn’t think that the extension of the casino’s hours would have a negative impact on the area as the casino was already open for quite a few hours per day. He doesn’t think that many people will use the casino during the early hours of the morning, expect for perhaps people who work night shifts. He thinks that the extended hours will have a minimal impact on the way the casino operates.

A legal storm is brewing to force the United States repeal of the gambling act: UIGEA, and struggling conventional casino operators are thinking of entering the online casino market. When the long awaited opening of the United States online casino sector happens, large conventional casino companies will try and enter (and dominate) the online industry. The reason I’m mentioning this is that Elizabeth Durante, a twenty-year-old College student from Connecticut was recently killed on Montville’s Interstate 395. Police offers have charged a man who works as a sailor at the Groton submarine base with driving under the influence and manslaughter. Durante was killed by a head-on collision caused by someone driving a car the wrong way.

This accident is causing governor M. Jodi Rell to rethink a proposal that will allow casino’s to extend drinking hours. Their state has two casino’s and it was thought that the proposal might go through before this tragic accident.

The State police are still investigating where the sailor was before the fatal accident. Durante was on a way to the airport. Rell said that Durante’s death is a tragedy and that it will force her to rethink the extended drinking hour proposal.
