How to Play Roulette

Posted by Renee

Roulette is largely a game of chance. Because of this, it is extremely exiting and fun although the player has little control of the outcome. Generally, up to 8 players compete against the house at one time. Players place bets on the number they believe (or hope) the ball will land on the roulette wheel. The dealer spins the wheel and takes each person’s bet. He or she will also pay out the cash chips.

European roulette is different to American roulette. The latter has a single 0 on the wheel, while the American wheel has two 00s. There are 37 slots on the European wheel and 38 slots on the American one. Consequently, a player’s odds of winning are lower when playing the American version. For this reason, experts suggest that individuals play European roulette when they have the opportunity.

When play begins, players buy in using chips that are a different color than the other players. This is to ensure that there is no confusion concerning wins, losses and who the chips belong to. Winners are paid in cash chips which they are to exchange for money at the cash desk.

Players can bet on the numbers on the wheel or the space outside of it on the table. The dealer spins the wheel and the bets are no longer accepted shortly thereafter. Once the wheel stops spinning and the ball has landed on the winning number, the dealer will then place a dolly on it. Losing bets are cleared off of the table. Winners are paid out their chips and then new bets can be made by the next group of players.

The European roulette table has a house advantage of 2.7%. An American roulette table has a house advantage of 5.26%. Consequently, it is harder to win while playing the American version.

The payouts will vary when playing roulette. On a straight up bet, the payout is 35 to 1. A split bet (two number bet) pays out 17 to 1. A street bet pays out 11 to 1, a corner bet pays 8 to 1, a six number bet pays 5 to 1, an outside dozen pays 2 to 1 and an even money, outside bet pays 1 to 1.

The object of roulette is to guess where the ball will land on the wheel. Therefore, it is more a game of luck than skill. However, there are roulette systems that promise to increase one’s odds of winning. For individuals that play a lot, these might be worth checking out.

There are three common roulette betting strategies. They include betting on the hot numbers (those that the ball keeps landing on), cold numbers (those where the ball has not landed) or betting on many different numbers. The last strategy is used because it increases one’s chances that the ball will land on at least one of their numbers.
